Steps to build a weather-tight wall
Product Spotlight
DIY guide: add a weather barrier and rainscreen to an exterior wall
Most wall leaks and rot start when water gets behind siding or stucco and has no way out. A weather barrier, good flashing and a rainscreen gap give that water a path down and out, and let the wall dry. These steps cover a typical re-side or new exterior wall.
Strip and inspect: Remove the old siding and check the sheathing. Replace any soft or rotted boards and make sure the wall is dry before you cover it.
Wrap the wall: Start at the bottom and work up with Driwall Drainable Housewrap, lapping each upper course over the one below it like shingles. Tape the seams.
Flash every opening: Seal windows, doors and other penetrations with KeeneFlash or KeeneSeal tape. Work from the bottom up (sill, then sides, then head) so every layer sheds water outward.
Add the rainscreen: Install Driwall Rainscreen mat over the housewrap in one continuous layer so water can drain straight down, following Keene's instructions for which side faces out. Use a thicker mat for brick or natural stone.
Leave the bottom open: Keep a drainage gap at the base of the wall and finish it with a weep screed or insect screen, so water and air can get out but bugs can't get in.
Install the finish: Fasten siding over the mat as usual. For stucco or thin stone veneer, install LathNet or metal lath, then apply the stucco base coat.
Before you start: Check your local building code and Keene's install guide for each product. For stucco, stone or anything above the first story, have a contractor do or check the work.
