DIY guide: the layers of a green roof

A green roof is built as a stack, and every layer protects the one below it. Install them in this order, from the roof deck up.

Root barrier: Keeps roots out of your waterproofing. Overlap the seams and seal them with KeeneFlash tape so roots can't find a gap.

Drainage: Carries extra water to the roof drains so the soil never sits waterlogged. Without it, plants drown and the roof carries more weight.

Retention and filtration: Retention mats hold water for plants between rains. Filter fabric keeps soil from washing into the drainage layer.

Growing media and plants: Use a lightweight engineered green roof soil, not garden soil, and choose plants that handle full sun and wind. We don't sell plants. Ask us where to source them for your region.

Edging and drain boxes: Edging holds soil and gravel in place along borders and walkways. Drain boxes keep roof drains clear and easy to inspect.

Irrigation: Driplines on a timer get new plants through their first season and through dry spells.

Pedestals for paths and seating: Pedestals and leveling shims set pavers flat over a sloped roof without puncturing the membrane.

Before you start: Make sure your roof can carry the weight of a fully soaked green roof and that the waterproofing is in good shape. Talk to a structural engineer or roofer before starting your next roof project.
