DIY guide: set up drip irrigation for a garden bed
Drip irrigation puts water right at the roots, wastes less than a sprinkler and keeps leaves dry. Most home beds can be set up in an afternoon.
Plan the layout: Sketch your beds and measure from the hose spigot to the farthest plant so you know how much dripline you need.
Start at the spigot: Attach a hose-end timer, then a swivel adapter to connect your supply line.
Run the dripline: Lay 1/4" dripline along each row of plants and hold it in place with stakes. Use barbed connectors, tees and elbows to branch and turn corners.
Add emitters and close the ends: Put inline emitters at thirsty plants and seal open line ends with goof plugs.
Test and set the timer: Turn the water on, check that every plant gets wet and fix any leaks. Water early in the morning and adjust run times as the weather changes.
Finish with edging: Install edging before you mulch so beds keep a clean line, mulch stays put and the dripline stays hidden.
